چکیده

We study microphase ordering of molten randomly grafted copolymers ~RGCs! by using a mean field theory and the replica method to calculate the quenched average. Our results illustrate that in the weak segregation limit ~WSI!, the optimal wave vector q* of the lamellar phase formed by molten RGCs, has a temperature dependence different from either linear random copolymers ~LRCs! or diblock copolymers ~DCPs!: when close, but below the microphase separation transition ~MST! temperature, q* increases sharply with decreasing temperature; then q* gradually acquires an asymptotic value determined by the length of the branch and the average distance between branch points on the backbone. Our results are compared with recent experiments, and the effects of chain architecture on the microphase separation characteristics of RGCs are delineated. Our results suggest a new method for controlling the microphase spacing by exploiting quenched disorder. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1382856#

The phase diagram of molten randomly grafted copolymers

We study the microphase segregation of molten randomly grafted copolymers ~RGCs! using a Landau field theory. Under one wave number approximation, we find three equilibrium ordered microphases: lamellar phase ~LAM!, hexagonal cylinder phase ~HEX!, and bcc sphere phase ~BCC!. The stability of these phases strongly depends on the architectural parameters describing the RGC chains ~e.g., the backb...

Impact of Conformational and Chemical Correlations on Microphase Segregation in Random Copolymers

Random copolymers play an important role in a range of soft materials applications and biological phenomena. An individual monomer is typically a single chemical unit whose length is comparable to or less than a Kuhn length, resulting in a monomer segment that is structurally rigid at length scales of a segregated domain. Previous work on random copolymer phase segregation addresses the impact ...

Mesophase formation in two-component cylindrical bottlebrush polymers.

When two types of side chains (A,B) are densely grafted to a (stiff) backbone and the resulting bottlebrush polymer is in a solution under poor solvent conditions, an incompatibility between A and B leads to microphase separation in the resulting cylindrical brush. The possible types of ordering are reminiscent of the ordering of block copolymers in cylindrical confinement. Starting from this a...

Amplifying (Im)perfection: The Impact of Crystallinity in Discrete and Disperse Block Co-oligomers

Crystallinity is seldomly utilized as part of the microphase segregation process in ultralow-molecular-weight block copolymers. Here, we show the preparation of two types of discrete, semicrystalline block co-oligomers, comprising an amorphous oligodimethylsiloxane block and a crystalline oligo-l-lactic acid or oligomethylene block. The self-assembly of these discrete materials results in lamel...

Fluctuation effects in the theory of weak supercrystallization in block copolymer systems of complicated chemical structure

To investigate the influence of fluctuation effects on conditions of microphase separation in two-component incompressible molten block copolymers of complicated chemical structure an altemative and more general fornlulation of the weak crystallization theory is developed using a new variational principle for the calculation of the free
